The 365 Commitment

Day 70 – Carpe Diem

Writing things down makes them happen. The 365 Commitment makes you write things down.  Therefore, the 365 Commitment makes things happen!  There’s a syllogism for you.

I really enjoy snowboarding.  But, for many years other priorities have  always managed to push snowboarding off into the future.    “I want to teach my kids to snowboard,” I would think to myself.  But, other hobbies and camp-outs and trips always took precedence.  “I’ll go next year,” I would say to myself.  Well, more than 18 years have gone by and I have not been snowboarding once.  Well that’s not exactly true.

One time, when the kids were little, we took them to the snow and had a great time because the little town we visited in the mountains had a ton of fresh snow. In fact, it was snowing a bunch while we were there.  We found a church parking lot to sled in, had snowball fights, and generally a good time as the snow came down.  It was great!  I checked out prices for lift tickets at the local chalet, and calculated the cost of renting equipment, thinking we might could do it.  Yikes!  Even I could not rationalize paying that that much money.  We just did not have it.

However, I did have my snowboard with me, and the streets in town were full of fresh snow . . ..  So I got the bright idea to find a steep one with good snow and use my Toyota 4-runner as my ski lift.  With my wife behind the wheel following me, and the kids watching their cheap and crazy dad through the windshield, I  carved down the long street from one side to the other.  Then I’d jump into the 4-runner and head back up to the top;  I made about four runs down that snowy street before a good wipe-out convinced me I’d got my fill.   It was a blast!  And the price was right.  Well, that was the last time I went snowboarding, unofficially.

The 365 Commitment requires writing down what is important.  Earlier this year I thought about it, and wrote down, “go snowboarding.”  I figured 19 years was long enough.  Well today that goal is coming true.  I finally get to teach one of my kids to snowboard. Woo hoo! I’ll let you know how it goes in my next blog.

If you want to make it happen, write it down, and commit to it.  Even if you are not sure how it will happen, having your goals front of mind will cause you to pay attention to when opportunities present themselves.  Then seize the day!
