The 365 Commitment

Green Eggs and Ham

Who knows what inspired Dr. Seuss to write Green Eggs and Ham. We know that it was a bet that he could not write a book, using only 50 simple words in the English vocabulary. Well, he succeeded and as a consequence produced one of the most memorable poems and children’s books ever written. This has been cited in Congress, the UN, and many other locations. Musicians have used it as inspiration for countless adaptations and even the name of Will.I.am. Yeah, Let’s get it started in here.

Early this morning, my boss had to talk me off the ledge so to speak. Sometimes, you get really emotional as you are fighting through the weeds and it takes a person who does not care about what you are dealing with to see how silly your reaction is. My frustration is acceptable, my reaction was silly. I missed my run this morning, so that has a lot to do with it. Normally, by the time I am done running 6 or more miles, all the frustration has worn off and I am ready to attack the day with a good attitude. Do not worry, I am running today sometime – the commitment continues.

That got me thinking. I need a good mechanism to help me out in an emotional emergency. Something that allows me to see the ridiculous nature of what I am dealing with. Something that allows me to remember what I am really trying to accomplish. My boss cannot be relied on for this, although he can certainly help occasionally. What I need is a self help mechanism. I need a instant response, a quick way to eject from the situation and have a good giggle. What could that be?

Well it hit me this morning. My wife decided to read me the poem, Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. By the time she got to eating green eggs with a goat in a boat, I was smiling at the irony. I do like Green Eggs and Ham after all, and I really do appreciate Sam I Am. So feeling stressed? Feeling overwhelmed? Getting tired of the bureaucracy, the people in your life that just do not make sense? Getting tired of the same ol same ol? Getting tired of just being tired? Well, take a moment and read out load the following poem. Guarantee that by the time this few minutes is over, you will be right as rain:

“GREEN EGGS AND HAM” (by Doctor Seuss)

I DO NOT LIKE THEM ANYWHERE!
I DO NOT LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM!
I DO NOT LIKE THEM, SAM-I-AM.

YOU DO NOT LIKE THEM. SO YOU SAY.
TRY THEM! TRY THEM! AND YOU MAY.
TRY THEM AND YOU MAY, I SAY.

SAM! IF YOU LET ME BE,
I WILL TRY THEM. YOU WILL SEE.

(… and you try them …)

SAY! I LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM!
I DO! I LIKE THEM, SAM-I-AM!
AND I WOULD EAT THEM IN A BOAT.
AND I WOULD EAT THEM WITH A GOAT…
AND I WILL EAT THEM, IN THE RAIN.
AND IN THE DARK. AND ON A TRAIN.
AND IN A CAR. AND IN A TREE.
THEY ARE SO GOOD, SO GOOD, YOU SEE!
SO I WILL EAT THEM IN A BOX.
AND I WILL EAT THEM WITH A FOX.
AND I WILL EAT THEM IN A HOUSE.
AND I WILL EAT THEM WITH A MOUSE.
AND I WILL EAT THEM HERE AND THERE.
SAY! I WILL EAT THEM ANYWHERE!
I DO SO LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU, SAM I AM.
