The roman gladiator is an example of how a culture puts on a display the rich greatness that marked Roman military achievment. By the time the 3rd century rolled around, the original meaning was replaced with a bit of irony as the gladiator became more popular than the cultural significance from which it came.
Our modern day gladiator could be the investigative reporter, the politician and perhaps even the astronauts.
