The first step is overrated. We build way to much meaning to taking the first step in any direction of self improvement. We worry, fret and get ourselves all geared up to take the first step and unfortunately discovery, sometimes way too late in life, that the first step is only what it is. The first step in a long series of many, many steps towards an eventual outcome. So the most important step is not the first step, not by a long shot. The most important step that you will take towards improvement is the next step.

Everyday and every hour you are faced with the perplexing challenge of taking the valuable next step in any process. It is the next step that thwarts us, eludes us, and we are unwilling to take. The first step may take courage, but it is the next step that takes persistence, strength of determination and an exercise of will. So if you find yourself wringing your hands, thinking about and pondering taking that first step on a new journey, realize this very important fact. The first step is only what it is. It is Day 1 in a long, arduous journey. The first step is the easiest, most comfortable step that you will take. It is the well paved, frequently trod step that many have taken. You are stressing out over the easy part!

It is the next step that is going to be hard. It is Day 2 or Day 366. It is the day after, when the pain kicks in. When the mental resistance is the strongest. When your primal mind is screaming at you do not do it. Your journey does not end when you take the first step, it only just begins and the first few steps are the easy ones, the path is always straight, easy to see and clearly defined. You are quite simply, worried about the wrong thing.

It is always the next step of a new exercise program, a new life style, a nutrition program, a spiritual journey. Whatever it is, you might as well get that first step behind you because your real challenge in life is the next step that you will take.
