The 365 Commitment

Day 187 – Working out the Kinks

For those of you who actually read this blog everyday – you will note that I have been drawing inspiration from fables, stories, motivational thoughts and the occasional idiom. Well my new one for today is “working out the kinks.” I heard this one yesterday, and it was made in excuse mode.

Not ready to roll this out yet, we are working out the kinks is a common phrase. I am not ready to start on my new (fill in the blank) because I am working out the kinks. I have come to the conclusion that working out the kinks is a kin to saying – I am lazy, not ready to commit to hard work yet and I am waiting for someone else to take up the charge – just not me.

Is that a bit harsh? Perhaps. However, one thing the 365 commitment has taught me is that the only true form of success is to GET ON THE PATH. The run begins in the morning, by getting on the path. The list gets done by walking out the door. You grow by meeting new people, you are on the path. If you sit in your comfort zone and think about getting on the path, and never really get on the path, then you are going to eventually out think yourself and you will go find another path to think about.

You will effectively work out the kinks, until you tire of working on the kinks and you will go find another path to work the kinks out on. The problem is that you never did GET ON THE PATH.

The only way something becomes successful is by starting the first iteration, getting on the path, starting. Call it agile, call it scrum, call it just the truth. Success comes to those that just start doing it. To repeat myself again – ideas are crap, execution is everything!

So there are some things I am delaying, because I am working out the kinks. I now exactly what those are. They are weighing down on me. I am resolving and writing down on my 365 list this morning – to consider EXACTLY what the kink is that I am am working on, determine a plan and start immediately on execution – no excuses. I am going to try and fail, because try, fail comes before try, success.

Somewhere on the path to greatness I will stumble over greatness. Greatness is achieved by accident, but only by those on the path. So you listening? GET ON THE PATH.
