My friend Guy wrote about Major vs Minor a few days ago. The jist of his argument is, efficient and meaningful moment toward your goal will only happen if you are focused on the doing things that get you there. Time is precious and can be wasted doing things that don’t matter. We can easily busy ourselves with things that don’t matter.
If you want to drive to Montana then organizing your closet is not going to get you there. A nicely organized closet is a non-sequitor in terms of getting you closer to Montana, a nice distraction that qualifies as something “good.” Remember the 11th commandment – “Thou shalt not fake thyself out.” Just doing something good is not enough, do the thing that is most critical to moving forward.
We’ve heard the lesson before, first things first, do major instead of minor things first, eat that Frog in the morning. I get this guilty feeling when I allow myself to be distracted. Maybe you can relate to this feeling, a nagging sense in the middle of your mind calling you out for organizing the deck chairs on the Titanic instead of getting your lifeboat in the water.
This is why the 365 Commitment asks us to focus each day on what is most important. This helps us see clearly when our efforts are not in alignment with what we really want and need. Be patient with yourself. Be grateful that you can see where your aim has been off. Now, re-aim and have courage to put your focus on the things that matter most today!
