How well can you articulate your future self?
Can you describe what your future self will look like? What you will be wearing? Where you will be living? What you will be engaged in doing? Do you know your future self well enough to carry on a conversation?
I am thinking not very well. Most people only have a vague sense of future self and would have difficulty answering any of those questions. Here is an interesting thought.
The better you know your future self the greater the possibility you will become that future self. The more you know that future self, the more control you have over your own life. You will not be just reacting anymore, you will be selecting.
Think on that word for a minute, selecting. Instead of reacting or responding. As you through life, propelling toward the future you, you will be merely picking from opportunity and experiences that get you closer to that future self. That is how this happens. You conceive of it and then it happens. Not by magic, but by selection.
So a critical exercise is to know your future self so well that everytime you make a decision in the present day, your are getting closer to that future. Like a sculptor, chiseling away at a master piece. You tap a little here and there and before you know it, what you had a vision for begins to emerge.
