Theodore Roosevelt is one of my heroes. His accomplishments are quite astonishing. Writer, Historian, Rancher, Naturalist, Academic, Statesman, Adventurer, Fitness Nut, Fighter, Taxidermist, Father and Husband, multi-lingual (he spoke German), visionary and a great Leader. He was incorruptible, his exploits fighting crime and corruption as New York City Police Commissioner, for example, were brilliant. Are you kidding? Those 1890’s New York City criminals and corrupt politicians were rough! Teddy took them on fearlessly and effectively. His books are highly respected works of academia. His courage in battle, in war, and in politics is legendary. He became President at 42 years old. He created national parks, and his sense of morality, responsibility, and fairness tamed the uber-greedy as he busted up Trusts (monopolies) and truly fought for the little guy, and all Americans. Long before his nephew’s “New Deal” Theodore promoted the “Square Deal” where those in power were not allowed to press their advantage and all individuals were treated with dignity and fairness; and, yet, respect had to be earned – not automatically given or expected.
When I read his biography a few years ago I was deeply humbled. How could one man kick that much ass, so to speak? I was also inspired. Which is why I am writing about him today. Teddy Roosevelt’s fierce determination and sheer competence are states of being that I aspire to, in my relatively small and humble way. This morning, when I look at my problems and responsibilities, I am thinking WWTD, What Would Theodore Do?
Well, I think Theodore would strenuously fight with every fiber of his being to overcome. He would not feel sorry for himself. He would not let himself even consider failure, he would be indomitable! He would kick ass!
Today, I am going to keep Theodore Roosevelt in mind as my coach and mentor. Do you have a historical hero? If so, animate them in your mind and make them you r coach for today!
