This is the blog posting that I did not want to write. I dreaded this moment, because I feel the day I write this is the day I will be committed to the concept for good. Well here it is. Waking up early, and consistently at the same time is really important. There I said it. I hate myself for it now, because I have formalized the idea that waking up at 5am for me is now what I do.
I have to face the facts. Even though on a Saturday morning, when I wake up and roll over and look at my phone and it says 4:58am – I know that I have to get up. My mind is screaming – No! Stay in Bed! You need sleep! You need to rest! You deserve a break! Nope. Sorry. Waking up at 5am everyday for me consistently is becoming a key step in the recipe for success that this commitment is teaching me. You see it is Saturday. I have already done my 365 Commitment, I ate healthy, I ran, I stretched, I prayed, I thought about what was important for me and my family and I have written some thoughts down. All before 7am. The consistency is important, but also being up and doing things distraction free is pretty important too.
Just deal with it. Waking up early every day works. Your are going to HATE it for the first 14 days at least. However, I PROMISE you that after 14 days you will start to adjust and it will not be that bad and you will start to actually enjoy it. Yes that is right, you will enjoy not sleeping in any more. Embrace the suck!
This morning when I had the internal debate in my head, I thought – hey I deserve at least one day that I can sleep in and do nothing for a while. That is absolutely true, giving yourself time to rest and recover is very important – however – training my self to push through and wake everyday at the same time and get the most important things done first is more important. I can go back to bed AFTER I have accomplished the things that will transform my life. Standing on that pinnacle at the top of the mountain of my success is far more important to me then taking an extra snooze on the trail. So the thought that won was this – Guy – if you really want to achieve your goals, achieve this supposed greatness that you aspire to, financial independence and all that then you are going to have to do a lot of difficult things. If you cannot wake up at 5am – then how are you going to tackle the really hard things. That thought got me out of bed.
I do not know what your 5am is. Your 5am could be 8am. The time does not matter. What matters is that it is early, a few hours before your day officially starts, and it is a time that you are ok with waking up at everyday consistently. Of course you could ignore this recommendation, I would not blame you if you did. However, the empirical evidence is that waking up at 5am everyday is going to be life changing.
