Shaking up my exercise routine with some Crossfit this week. I’m volunteering as a camp counselor and a couple of the Directors put on a Crossfit workout in the mornings at 7am. So, I’m writing my blog the night before so I can get up and hit it.
A few years ago I joined a crossfit gym, and for me it was a great experience. The people there were friendly and encouraging. Working out with a group of people made it more fun and the timed routines and teh variety and rhythm (music!) meant I got a great work out in less than an hour including stretching. When I changed jobs I had to leave the group, but I do miss those workouts that would leave me gasping on the floor and feeling great afterwards and the comeraderie of that particular gym.
One thing I will say, Crossfitters have a reputation for getting carried away. Personally, I avoided getting too hyper about lifting heavy – that seems to lead to injury too often, so I always paced myself and would lift hard and push myself – but avoided going too heavy. I saw some guys getting carried away and pushing it in terms of personal bests. They were having fun and were stoked about it, but it was not too long before injuries pulled them down to earth.
I like how Cross-fit focuses on functional body movements, pushups, pullups, box jumpting, and Olympic style lifts, sprints, etc.. I’m sure I’ll be able to work my pushups into the cross-fit routine and be able to keep my commitment of 100 on Mondays.
Well, I gotta get back to the festivities and do my counselor gig. I’ll let you know how the 7am cross-fit goes in my blog tomorrow.
Shake up your workout when the opportunity comes along. I know I am 🙂
