Blog 185 – Happy Campers -or- Perspective and Growth

The morning cross-fit session was good.   Early in the morning, high in the mountains, on a dusty flat section of land in a hollow with towering pines all around we engaged in about an hour of stretching, running, bur-pees, pushups, lunges, and squats.  Our leader, an interesting adventurer and leader who reminds me of the Leonidas from movie 300, with his big beard and chiseled physique, put us though our paces with an easy friendly leadership style.

The change of pace and  perspective provided by the mountain environment are great for resetting my mind.  Of greater impact is the change in perspective I’m gaining from focusing on the needs of the kids.  I’m part of a team of counselors and directors at a teen camp for this week. Even though I have teens of my own, being here reminds me that these kids are on the threshold of adulthood with a great need for guidance and good example in life.

I am not the perfect example. But I can try to be the better version of myself.  And that is what I am motivated to be this week.  This seems like the lesson for me today. To carry this lesson forward with renewed vigor.  To recognize that I must always, each day seek to be the better version of myself.  The 365 Commitment focuses on incremental change, which means we are not radically changing – rather we seek to be a better version of ourselves each day growing and seeking continually.

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater when changing; keep the best of yourself and seek to burn off the rest to make room for new growth.  Seek a meaningful spiritual connection and learn from the ancients. You can’t have the deadwood and new growth – it’s one of the other.
