I know what I should do, but I hesitate. A few moments go by and some part of my brain talks me out of it. And, I fail to take action. This is something I do, and it is frustrating! It is a bad habit. It seems to be a common thread at the root of my failures to maintain good habits that I want to keep, but fail to do so. At some point I hesitate, and . . . make the decision not to do it. It is a sticking point that is insidious. And, apparently common!

If you can  relate to this, then perhaps this is your lucky day, because I stumbled upon a solution. I found a video of Mel Robbins, a pragmatic “no nonsense” motivational coach, explaining how she suffered from this exact problem and found a way to beat it. It’s a compelling story,.

In the following video she tells the story of her epiphany, and how it changed everything.

She found a way to interrupt the hestation/bad-decision cycle. A the moment you know what to do, begin a five second count down and launch into action like a rocket! Don’t give you brain a chance to talk you out of it. There is something about doing the countdown that amounts to a brain hacking technique that works.

I have begun using this technique to good effect, and there are some solid psychological mechanics behind why. Watch the Mel Robbins video, she explains it well and tells a great story..

Break the insidious habit of knowing but not doing, give it a try.
