Been struggling to focus myself enough to establish clear objectives for my personal life. Having more success with company objectives as they are already more specific.
Inspired by a thought I had a few days ago, I decided that I did not need to set a goal for every aspect of my life. Rather, I would identify what matters the most.
Of course, that has not been easy to figure out either! I came up with an approach where I just started randomly writing the areas that mattered the most to me. That brainstorming session helped, but also confirmed that I had several areas that were important to me.
The next question, inspired by yesterday’s thought was – out of all these areas of importance, which of them am I willing to measure?
That really gave me pause for thought. For example, having a well maintained home was one of the areas that I put down. When I asked myself, how would I measure that, I had a long internal debate. The only measure I could really come up with, was the wife approval index (WAI). I made that up just now! This measure would be formed by me asking my wife once per week how she felt about the overall maintenance of our home. I could then start to build an index that gauged my success.
Wow. That was a scary thought! I quickly pushed that area to lower priority, that would be a risky proposition indeed!
Joking aside, figuring out how you would possibly measure success is a great way to prove if you are really serious about tackling an objective.
So I am going to continue to brainstorm what matters, evaluate how I would measure action to improve and narrow my list down to the next thing I am going to focus on.
