BLOG 132 – G.R.O.W. Part 1

Alan Fine is a Performance Coach who began his career working with athletes and expanded into all sorts of career and business settings.  His motivation for helping people stemmed from his own childhood experience of choking spectacularly in a tennis match.

He was 11 yrs old, and unexpectedly found himself well in the lead during a school  tennis tournament facing one good player.  But, Alan lost his focus when he realized that he only had to win a couple more volleys to win the tournament.  He lost, and the defeat was crushing, but a good lesson that got him to thinking about what happened and why it happened.  He realized that it was not a “knowledge” problem at all , but it was mental.

I will share his method of getting the mind right and finding a “flow” state of consciousness when in a pressure performance  situation,  but, more importantly for me is his wisdom and style as a coach.  He has some lessons for me to learn!  For example, resisting the urge of telling someone what to do!  As I alluded to earlier, often it is not a knowledge problem that prevents people from success in a given situation.  They know what to do.  So than what is it?

I’ll blog more in depth about what really lies behind many performance issues and  also delve into what Alan has to teach us as coaches in terms of approach with those we seek to help.  I will explain his G.R.OW. method, a process for getting our heads right and attenuating focus.
