The 365 Commitment

Blog 224 – Marcus Aurelius Concurs

Marcus Aurelius ruled Rome in the second century.  His philosophy was Stoicism, and he left many writings providing advice on how to live.  Although The365Commitment is not based upon or even directly inspired by Marcus Aurelius, it turns out that 2000 years ago or so he laid out a similar framework for improving oneself and advised similar habits for developing and preparing oneself to live our life most effectively.

For example, he suggested rising early each day and taking time to look inward, examine ourselves and reflect and then to to the same in to evening.  This reflects the recommended 365 practice of thinking about what is most important each morning, writing down our goals for the day, and then praying or meditating on these things.  Then at night, checking in with your list and reflecting on how things went, then praying or meditating for insight.

In his book, “Meditations”  Marcus advises preparing oneself in the morning to meet challenging people later in the day.  Not preparation to be against them or the world, but rather to prepare to respond reasonably and with patience, understanding, forgiveness and kindness.

Habitual morning and evening routines were recommended by many great thinkers and philosophers of the past. The365Commitment emerged as a solution to the same existential reality the ancients experienced.  What was true then is true now, we are mortal and life is uncertain and chaotic, while it is also beautiful, joyful and amazing.  Creating a morning and evening habit of reflection and prayer (meditation) is a time tested strategy for    designed to prepare us for challenges and center our being and align our mind and spirit so we can grow, manage change, and live well.
