Get Small

If you have ever been like me, you have started out a million times trying to accomplish something awesome. You want to get healthy, you want to learn something, achieve some great objective. You figure out exactly what you think you need to do to achieve it, you then set out on a course or a program. Things go great for a short while and then it all falls apart. You do not feel like starting over again, so you wait, throw all progress out the window and almost go the opposite direction for a while. A behavioral psychologist once told me that this was a clinical definition of a disorder. Guess I am all screwed up then.

A secret that is so marvelously simple that I am ashamed to even admit, is the fact that going small fixes this problem. Instead of going big and failing a few days later, ratchet back what you are doing to something smaller and go again. When you find something that you can repeat consistently for a long period of time, then you have found what you are actually capable of.

I learned this doing pushups. My small was literally 1. I could do 1 and keep that up, no problem. Of course I made it harder, increment of one per day. What I do not talk about is how many times I failed starting out at 25 per day or even 15 per day. I even tried adding 5 per day. What works was 1 per day. That did the trick. Go small. After a year I was easily doing 100, 200 and even 300 per day. The point is that I kept the habit. I will repeat this carefully:

The incremental improvement you will gain from doing a small thing every day will always be better then any large single effort you can accomplish.

You may think that you crammed all night and did a great job on that english paper in high school, but the reality is you could never be better than what you would have accomplished if you had worked on it a little at a time every day.

My advice if you are struggling with keeping up a good habit, is to go small, real small. You need to get small so you can become big.

Many people struggle with controlling their impulse eating. I know I do! I have tried a million times to control myself. My keto diet lasts a few weeks, my carb free diet lasts a few weeks, my glucose free diet last a few weeks, you name the diet it will always last a few weeks. Here is another thought – why do you have to go big and suddenly be awesome and go all keto overnight? Why not just go small? Go keto on just one meal per day. If that is not small enough, pick to eat 1 healthy snack alternative once per day. Just pick something small and keep it up for a long time and then later add improvements.

Here is a cold hard fact. If you have not got the results that you want, then you are failing. Whatever you are doing is not working, so why keep repeating the same cycle over and over again if it got the results that you have right now? Why not try a different tactic this time! Get Small instead of All In.

By the way this trick works with almost everything. Want to become a decent Ballerina? Then just start small, real small, everyday and learn a little at a time. Before you know it you will be dancing your way into a wonderful new happy space.
