When in Doubt, Pick Beauty

Often times we struggle with a choice between multiple paths, different options, a decision to make. The hardest ones are the when you have a choice between two good options. You need to make a decision. Doing both is not an option, so you have to go down one or the other. You can pray and ask for divine guidance, but my experience is that I have never met someone with authority, divine or otherwise that is going to make a decision for you. You will have to weigh your options and pick the one that you think is the best.

Many times this decision will lead to paralysis and you will not be able to choose. Consequently, you throw the whole idea out and you choose to do nothing or procrastinate even further. So how do you solve this dilemma?

Here is an idea – pick the beautiful one.

Now there are many definitions of beauty and I will not argue one way or another. However if you have equally compelling options – why not pick the beautiful path!? After all we will fail a lot, struggle most of the time and find that everything is not awesome no matter what path we pick. So you might as well have a beautiful environment to be miserable in!

I spoke with a famous Ultra Marathon athlete recently. Bronco Billy. Although he had a lot to say, this most profound was this basic concept. When I asked him which race should I target to run. I asked him if I should pick the easier or the harder run, his comment was to pick beauty.

Thought there was multiple meanings in that suggestion, so I thought I would pass it on!
