Name the Demon

Psychology research indicates that you are more likely to overcome a personal challenge if you can actually identify that you have one. Seems obvious, but interestingly enough, many of us walk around completely oblivious to what plagues us. Sometimes you are struggling, but do not really know why. You just know the symptoms but are really fighting something that you just cannot clearly identify. That can be the worst sort of scenario, leaving you guessing a lot and often times taken incorrect courses of action in your attempt to resolve.

In either situation, a well known challenge or one that evades you, it is absolutely true that if you identify and give the source of your struggles, you are more likely to defeat the adversary. If you think about it, this is absolutely true. For example, many major religions will identify the source of ailments as the “devil.” Now there may actually be a devil, I am not going to debate that topic, but the clear fact is that by naming the demon you are already well on the way to defeating it.

You could actually have some fun with this. You might name them different names, so you clearly start identifying the source of your problems. That temptation to eat sugary snacks could be called Fred and that desire to push off your morning work out, Charlie. Sorry, to all those people named Fred and Charlie, just using this as an example. Naming the demon is a simple, yet very effective strategy to defeating things that are harming you.
