Metrics that are poorly considered, evaluated incorrectly and diagnosed with inaccuracy are dangerous. They even could be life threatening. They can destroy public policy and cause people to make disastrous decisions. Yet, we all waive metrics, ranges and measures around as if they were sound and completely accurate. We make appeals to authority citing a metric and use that to persuade. How confident are we in the number being cited as evidence? How reliable or accurate is the algorithm behind the metric. I would offer that is a really important consideration.
