Day 205 – We Wield the Double Edged Sword

Ever since I left my corporate job, I’ve been on a thrilling journey of diving deep into new technological advancements, particularly AI. I’ve had the privilege of hearing diverse perspectives, some extolling the immense benefits of this innovation, while others have sounded the alarm on its potential disastrous consequences. After careful consideration, I’ve come to the realization that both sides of the argument hold merit.

We find ourselves in a unique position, wielding a double-edged sword. Never before in the annals of human history have we been endowed with such boundless potential. What would have necessitated years of painstaking design and development can now be accomplished in a matter of minutes. What was once a financial barrier is now a gateway accessible to all, regardless of location, for a nominal fee.

All innovations throughout history have had this same dilemma, just not with the same potential impact. The Gutenberg press is perhaps the most similar. The ability to make the written word, books, and printed material accessible to a broader segment of the population was definitely a spark for the scientific revolution and reformation of dogmatic belief systems.  This was also a double-edged sword, in that the propagation of the written word could also be used for negative or disastrous consequences.

Our society seemed to survive, or at least remnants of our society did, for which new ones were built. However, humanity seems to have faired well after this technical innovation. However, there were also the disastrous consequences of mass propaganda and other evils that led to several major world wars. Although I am not sure I can put that all on the doorstep of typed copies of books, it certainly began the foundation of the modern age.

There have been many more, some of which we are still struggling to assimilate into our societies. I am unsure if any culture is strong enough to withstand the onslaught and rapid development of new innovations we have experienced over the last twenty years. A strong culture would have defense mechanisms built to avoid or steer clear of the evils that could be deployed with a new innovation. Perhaps we have some strength to promote the good over the bad, but that feels blurry and unclear at this point.

This leads me to this passionate plea: the only way out is for the good people to embrace these new innovations and create new and wonderful things with them. To create the good, build to inspire and to lift, to heal, to cure, and to radiate positivity. History has not been too kind to the good people who have decided to put their heads in the sand and hope the new innovation goes away. Our only chance is if the great ones decide to embrace innovation and lead us all down the better and more correct paths.
