Day 90 of commitment has brought me face-to-face with a pattern I’ve come to call Cinderella Syndrome. While the name might suggest a clinical condition rooted in unrealistic reliance on others, that’s not the angle I’m exploring. Instead, it’s about something far more common and personal—the chase for the next shiny object and the illusion that success is just waiting to be handed to us.
We grow up on stories of magical transformations and serendipitous discoveries. We see famous actors or entrepreneurs seemingly rise overnight and think, “That could be me.” The truth, however, is that behind every so-called “overnight success” is a journey of effort, persistence, and resilience. Cinderella Syndrome feeds the myth that we can bypass this hard work. It whispers that we just need the right idea, the right moment, or the right person to save us.
But that’s not how life works.
The Cycle of Shiny Objects
Here’s how the cycle goes: You have a spark—a brilliant idea that fills you with optimism. You start pouring your energy into it, convinced that this is it, the idea that will change everything. But then you hit the wall. The grind sets in, and you realize it’s going to take more than just enthusiasm. Discouragement creeps in. That excitement you had starts to fade, and suddenly, the idea feels less magical.
And this is where Cinderella Syndrome rears its head. Instead of pushing through, you spot the next shiny object—another idea that feels easier, fresher, and filled with possibility. You abandon the hard path and leap into the new idea, convinced this time will be different. But, inevitably, the same thing happens. The hard work comes knocking, and the cycle begins again.
The Myth of the Prince’s Butler
We all want the fairytale moment—the prince’s butler showing up at the door with our glass slipper, the instant confirmation that we’re on the right path. But reality doesn’t work that way. Success doesn’t come from waiting for the fairy godmother to wave her wand. It comes from perseverance through the hard parts, through the moments when discouragement tells you to quit.
This doesn’t mean your ideas aren’t good. In fact, most ideas have the potential to succeed if they’re pursued with grit and determination. The problem isn’t the idea; it’s our willingness to endure the discomfort and struggle that comes with bringing it to life.
Pushing Through the Hard Part
I’ve seen this play out in my own life countless times. I’d get discouraged, spot another shiny object, and jump ship. Meanwhile, I’d look at someone like my neighbor, who owns a couple of fast-food franchises, and think, “He’s got it so easy.” But in reality, his success wasn’t effortless—it was the result of sticking with something long enough to make it work. That’s where I’d faltered. I hadn’t pushed through the discouragement phase to see the success on the other side.
Choose to Commit
The antidote to Cinderella Syndrome is simple, though not easy: commitment. Whatever your idea is, whatever path you’re on, stick with it. Push through the discouragement and the hard work, because success doesn’t come from flitting from one idea to the next. It comes from dedication. It’s about fulfilling the potential of one idea before you even consider moving on to another.
Once you’ve achieved success, the horizon opens up, and you’ll have the freedom to explore other pursuits. But first, you have to stay the course. Break free from the cycle, and you’ll find that the glass slipper fits only when you’ve earned it.
