Day 17 – Fight or Flight?

So yesterday I was all pumped up and excited to seize the day. Today I am stumbling through my list with a sense of apathy. I am trying to figure this emotion out. One thing is for certain – I am keeping the commitment! Regardless of my mood, I am going to prayerfully create my list each morning. Even if I just put one thing down that I need to do – I am going to make sure that I keep my end of the bargain up.

So I analyzed this morning, why the sudden change of emotion? From elation to annoyance. I think I have it figured out. It is stress. Stress about things that you have to accomplish, or stress about what someone said to you or what you said to someone. It seems that stress of this sort causes a flight or fight response in people. My reaction is either to run away and bury myself in an activity that distracts me (like watching TV, flight) or to drop everything I am doing and focus on the one problem with intensity (fight).

This is what causes the process of good habit forming to fall apart. We get stressed and our reaction is not do to the normal right thing that keeps us stable – our reaction is to do something different. I am going to spend more time thinking about this, not sure I have the complete answer.

However, one thing is for certain – times of stress is when it is even MORE critical to sit quietly in the morning and really prayerfully consider what you need to focus on today. It is in these moments where an honest conversation with yourself to determine if fight, flight or stay the course is required.

Maybe I am the only one that experiences this phenomena, perhaps I am just rambling through this email so that I can quickly check the box on what I am supposed to do today so that I can get on to the “fight” mode I want to be in right now.

Ok. Taking a deep breath. I got my list done, I am not going to let others destroy what is important to me. Now it is time to FIGHT! Game on!
