So I am literally going to run off COVID. Initially, when the pandemic hit I was doing pretty good. My running was keeping up, I was eating good and all of that. However, slowly, slowly, I started to get a little soft around the edges. Stuck in my office on the phone started to take it’s toll. My daily 6 mile regimen became a 2 mile regimen. Pushups were replaced with Popcorn, Protein Bars with Chocolate Bars. Next thing you know, I have put on a few extra pounds. Drat.
Anyway, I am absolutely going to just run my way out of this. Serving two purposes. I have 272 days left until my 100 mile trail race AND I need to get rid of the extra layer I put on during hibernation. Now that I am travelling again, I have noticed very quickly that my sedentary office life for the last 18 months was taking its toll. Well, I started last week and now that I am in the good ol streets of Cupertino, time to pour it on with a little extra.
Something about running in a quiet run down neighborhood with a bunch of homes built in the 70s that are out of repair that are each worth 2M a piece is just inspiring. I mean where else can you run past 1 Trillion dollars in real estate in less than a mile?
Anyway, I spent the weekend planning and preparing my new running regime. Some great new features built in. Fartletts (swedish for really sucky speed work), hill repeats (german for torture), and back to back long runs. I had already been working up to this again. BTW, never recommend running any more than 10% greater in mileage than you were previously. So I will be back up to ~50miles per week this next week and then shortly thereafter will start the climb toward 100mile weeks.
So running is my friend again. As I finished my run this morning, I had this strange sense of relaxation wash over me. It was like putting on an old comfortable blanket. Be gone pandemic! Time to shed you off as I pour on the mileage!
