Before movies and streaming services the primary mode of entertainment in society was theater and the plays written for them. Like sailing versus driving, society had theater for multiple millenia. TV has been around for less then a century.
So maybe we should not be so quick to abandon our oral traditions. Perhaps we should revive, patronize and sponsor more of them.
