It always starts with one. The one with the passion. My daughter and I went and participated in the Grateful Dead at the Movies where they played one of their 1972 concerts in Copenhagen Denmark. That show highlights a song at the beginning and end by Ron “pigpen” McKernan. Most people do not know that it was pigpen that was the passion behind starting a blues band, which initially was called the Warlocks. He recruited the initial members and of course the local banjo, steel guitar instructor Jerry Garcia was a good candidate. Later that year, he would die from drinking himself to death, unfortunately. People do not remember him much, but it was his idea, his vision, his passion that started one of the most remarkable musical groups in human history. Could you be the one? Day 353 – les Lumières
Immanuel Kant’s 1784 essay, “What is enlightenment?” marked the end of an era, much like we might be at the cusp of a new one today. The Enlightenment, characterized by reason and a departure from superstition, was known as *les Lumières* by the French and *Aufklärung* by the Germans. We are now entering an “Age of Knowledge” where access to information is ubiquitous, shifting the focus from acquiring knowledge to exercising judgment.
