The 365 Commitment

Day 54 – Vocare

This morning I found my vocare. On the 12th Green at the Wild Horse Resort in Tempe, AZ at 5:00am as the moon was rising over the desert floor. Surrounded by the silhouettes of cacti and other exotic looking plants I finally figured out what my calling is. That is what vocare means – a latin term. It can actually mean many things – put perhaps the one that I have always liked is that vocare refers to your voice. What is your voice going to be?

Well 54 days into the 365 Commitment I found out what I want to do. When I started this commitment, I wrote down a few things I wanted to accomplish and my hope was that keeping the commitment everyday for 365 days in a row I would be able to accomplish what I wrote down. That is the implied promise of the 365 commitment. If you write something down, that is in harmony with God (or whatever you call God) and you keep this commitment everyday then somewhere along the path it will happen.

Well it happened for me. The primary thing I wanted to accomplish on this 365 journey was to figure out exactly what I wanted to do in this next chapter of my life. For you younger folks out there – realize this now – you will have MANY chapters in your life. You are not going to decide now on something that you will do forever. What you decide to start on now – will most likely have nothing in common with what you are doing 30 years later! So get over yourself – and GET ON THE PATH.

So on to my next chapter. I now know with crystal clarity what I want to accomplish, and what my mission is going to be in the next phase of life. However, now that I know what mountain I am going to climb – I realize the mountain is very big, steep, and scary looking. In fact I cannot even see the top!

That is not the point. Success comes when you are on the path, not when you get to the top. This is an error I have made my whole life. I think that success is when you hit the top. Incorrect – success is something you stumble into somewhere along the path to the top. The point is that you HAVE TO BE ON THE PATH.

Another mistake I have made much of my life is to decide that another mountain looks easier to climb and so I have stopped climbing the mountain that I am on and have decided to change the path I am on and attempt another climb. This puts me back to day 1 – climbing a different mountain. Further from success because once again – Success is found when you are ON THE PATH.

So the 365 commitment has already paid off for me in a major way. I figured out what PATH I want to be on, and now it is time to start hiking up the mountain.
