Day 166 – Do Not Stop for Golden Apples

People the really know me have always known that I am capable of complete and total focus on a particular task. This talent is short lived, sporatic, and rarely focused on an overall goal or objective.

I am trying to learn the art of maniacal focus, or radical focus as Christina Wodtke phrased it. I am starting to become aware of my problem, it is a problem that people have told me for years. The problem has to do with golden apples.

Atalanta, in the Greek story, is challenged to a race by a potential suitor. I think you can guess what the stakes were for the winner of the race. She is a very fast runner, and she was rightly confident in her ability to win this race. However, the suitor new her weakness and when ever she would start to break away he would roll a golden apple in front of her trail. She would become distracted and stop an pause to pick the apple up.

He repeated this tactic three times and sure enough he won the race and also Atalanta. She fell victim to my problem, along the path to my goals I find too many golden apples in the path and most the time, I do not even finish the race.

This is what prevents me from maniacal focus, and I am to change that by creating clear objectives with defined and measurable key results.

Andy, I know you are not with us anymore but I have heard your voice and I am in the path.
