I hit on a new idea today that I am contemplating adding to my 365 habit building formula. The concept is based on something simple. They say it takes about 5000 hours to be proficient at something, however, general competence is much lower – probably around 500 hours of dedication toward a topic. So if I want to learn something, I need to starting putting time into it.
Sounds really overwhelming actually. With my new found habit building formula, I am realizing that if I somehow forced myself into a habit of spending 1 hour on the most important subject I wanted to gain competency in – that in 1 year I would have 365 hours. That is more then half way to competency. In two years, I would be very competent.
So 1 – 2 years from now I could have a well developed competency that I did not have before. All I have to do is to repeat something consistently everyday. I may or may not want to take it to expert level. I think a commitment to go 5000 hours probably takes a job, as 2000 hours is basically full time for 1 year.
For now – I will pick one super cool competency that I can pick up during my “learning time” hour.
Now, if I only could call Tank and ask to load that B212 Helicopter program!
