Day 298 – Fight the Cause Not the Symptom

Many of us go through our lives fighting the symptoms. We feel sad, so we attempt to react to that by making ourselves feel better. We feel frustrated so we attack something that is not even close to the source of our frustration. We are tired all the time, so we watch TV or stream shows to take a break. We treat symptoms, our society is really focused on that. I think it is probably the easy way out, rather then facing the real problem.

You see we do not want to face the real problem. Chances are if we really thought about how tired we are, we would eventually come to the conclusion that we are actually not physically working hard enough. A body in disuse is not needed to be energetic. Today I was reading about the impact of the human foot on the rest of the body mechanics. The stronger, more stable the foot and all its hundreds of components the more things in the entire body work the way they are supposed to. The foot is actually rather amazing, a marvel of human anatomy. The nerve endings along in the foot are so directly related to the rest of the body, some cultures have spend thousands of years determining how to influence the body with attention to the human foot, the nerve endings and the connection to other muscles the leg. To my point – if your knees, hips, or calves hurt because of walking or running – you might never even consider the fact that your pain is because your are overcompensating for a weak foot.

Same think goes in other aspects of our life. There are some many things impacted by your diet for example. What you eat impacts you in fascinating ways. We do not want to admit this, because of our obsession with sugary, salty, caffeinated foods. You eat poorly and things just do not work out well for you, the body starts to react and as that reaction gets negative, it starts to impact your mind, your soul. Hate to tell you this – but a lot of your challenges, whatever they are, maybe directly related to what you are eating.

Another aspect would be physical activity. If you are not moving around a lot, the body is going to start to suffer. Many of your pains, inflexibility, and all together lack of energy are associated with the lack of movement in life. Quite simply, the more you move around the better the body functions and the better you feel. Of course there are unavoidable disabilities, illness and the like that can make this very difficult – the point is that if you are looking for a root cause to your mental issues – fix this first.

Yet we suffer with depression, anxiety, stress, and a whole host of other ailments. Many of these would not be as bad if we focused on the basic core elements of good health. Do not get me wrong – there are cases of clinical depression that should be taken seriously and treated because there are sometimes things that are just wrong and have to be either corrected through medicine or serious intervention. However, a focus on physical health and a good source of nutrition is probably still the best thing that any human can do to improve their condition – regardless of what it is.

Our problem is we focus  on the symptoms and in so doing continue to ignore this basic concept. We even make it worse by stopping physical activity and eating sugary processed foods. I think I am learning – that I cannot ignore physical health. It has to be a top priority at all times. So many critical elements of my mental, spiritual and physical life are dependent on good health.
