Early in the morning I always wake up the same way, dreaming intensely then emerging into consciousness. I find that the next 15-20 minutes of waking is prime reflection time. Often solutions to problems I’ve been thinking about emerge, or present themselves as I transition from dreaming into thinking.
I think this is due to the normal functions of the brain updating as I sleep. The Right brain (hemisphere dedicated to the unknown) is informing the left brain (dedicated to the known – consolidated knowledge) through dreams of images and feelings. Who knows the mechanisms are at work as we cycle through deep sleep and dream state. I do know that epiphanies can come, seem to come, in the first 15 – 20 minutes of waking, if I let them. This seems to be a golden time that I think is worth taking advantage of due to the mind resetting and refreshing itself over-nite. Perhaps the subconscious mind is working on issues and problems we are dealing with; and, as we emerge from sleep and the dream state those solutions are bubbling up and are available to be realized.
So, as an addition to the 365 habit forming commitment, I will pay attention to the thoughts and ideas that present themselves during the first 15-20 minutes of waking in the early morning. The brain/mind is very active during sleep as it updates and consolidates and connects the incoming data from the day. I think the subconscious mind is very powerful, and it works on problems and issues we are facing all the time. This golden time of transition from sleep to wakefulness seems to provide access to the solution the subconscious mind is working on, and therefore is worth some focus and attention.
Capture and use the wisdom of the subconscious/dream state to realize answers to issues you are dealing with. If I am experiencing this phenomena than surely some of you are as well. As we seek t make the most of our days though conscious habit forming, why not work with the natural systems already ensconced in our bodies/minds?
