The 365 Commitment

Day 43 of 84 – The DBnD1 Technique

What do you do on the days when you just feel absolutely overwhelmed? When you just do not feel like doing anything because it all just seems overwhelming?

I have discussed this before, because it is a recurring theme with me. I am assuming that others have the same challenge. You get to a point where things just seem to cascade all around you. It feels like there is a million things that you have to do. You do not even know where to start. You do not even want to because it just seems like to much. In fact, you would rather crawl in a hole and do nothing then face the overwhelming amount of stuff to do.

I have created a technique for this and I could not come up with a name, so I am calling it DBnD1. I will explain, but first you need to accept a very important premise. Part of your mind is a complete liar, fabricator of the truth, and over exaggerates on purpose. Your situation is never as bad as that part of your mind pretends it to be. It is trying to avoid hard work, avoid danger, avoid risk. That part of your brain will make it seem like there is no possible way to solve it, so you might as well do nothing. You must realize this. Some of us listen to this part of our brain too much. There was a time when this part of the brain was highly needed, the days when stepping out of the cave could lead to your brutal and immediate death. Not so anymore. Having someone tell you no is NOT life threatening, but this part of the brain reacts to the fear of rejection and the fear of a saber toothed tiger in the same manner.

So what does DBnD1 stand for? It stands for take a Deep Breath aNd Do the 1st thing that comes to your mind. Does not matter what it is, just do it. Take a deep breath and the first thing that you see, hear, or prompted to do – just do it. Do not question, just do. You may start immediately start feeling better, if not, repeat DBnD1 a few times. I promise you that by the time you get to 3 or 4 of the DBnD1 cycle you will feel positive and happy. You will be able to take on the world again. In fact, it will not seem overwhelming anymore. Suddenly, those 3 small things off your plate will restore the camel’s back.

This is what I did this morning. Was feeling a little overwhelmed, so I just started picking a few things to work on. Now I am back at it, and going full force. That is good because, when I get done working I need to still complete my exercises. Half way through my 84 day sprint!
