The 365 Commitment

Progress is Perfection

I have this false impression that perfection is an end state, or at least the place that I am trying to get to. The point I am learning, in an emotional sense, is that perfection is not an achievable endpoint, but rather perfection is 100% about process.

I say this because in an universe of infinite possibilities, and innumerable branches growing everyday the concept of an end state is ludicrous. There can never be an end, when progress is constant, eternal. So in our limited mortal life, living in a sea of infinite, the only thing we can hope for is achieving close to perfection is in a process. That is impossibly hard, but not as impossible as achieving the perfect end state. That territory is reserved for supernatural forces, even God.

So for us mere mortals, all we have is the process and that concept assumes progress. This means that the absolute enemy to our progress is seeking the end state of perfection. If we were to switch our focus on perfecting our process, then we are forced to realize that the only way for that to happen is through trial and error.

This is my way of proving that progress is always better than nothing.

Why do I bring this up? There is something on my list that I want to accomplish, but I am worried about it being perfect. Consequently, I am paralyzed. The only way out of this is with progress. Progress is perfection.

Getting really metaphysical here for a moment, I will proffer that the definition of God is Perfection and I will assert that God is perfect because God is progress. Substitute the term God with whatever you want. The point being that progress is one of the ultimate human ideals.

Now, I can already hear the counter argument. What defines progress? What if one person’s progress is another’s demise? That is a moral argument and that is not my point. Your progress, whatever that maybe, is what keeps you alive and thriving. You were born to progress and what constitutes progress is for you to decide.

So if you want to get closer to perfection, get closer to God, or the ultimate human ideal, then you better start progressing. That only happens by getting started. So stop using excuses, stop trying to be perfect and just get started already!
