Symbolic Inducement

More on Kenneth Burke. He argued that one of the biggest things that separates the human species from all other animals is the use of symbols. We are a symbol using and misusing species is something that he would write. So he had a lot to say regarding the use of symbols. One of the interesting thoughts was this idea he called symbolic inducement. This is the frequent attempt by humans to use symbols to manipulate or coerce other humans. They idea is that they use symbols to direct human acts in a particular direction. An obvious example would be an arrow telling you what direction to travel. However, if you think a bit deeper on this, I am sure you can identify many more examples of this.

Now, the use of symbols to manipulate are not always that obvious. The symbol is not as clear cut as an arrow, or a stop sign. Many times the symbols are extremely sophisticated and subtle. I have to tell you, personally, I am getting really tired of this! Ugh! Every where you look or listen you are being bombarded by other humans trying to manipulate you with a symbol! It is exhausting! Now, this is not all bad. There are powerful symbols in our lives that remind us of commitments, sacrifices, promises, covenants, and oaths. That ring on your finger, the emblem you wear on your neck, that logo you proudly wear on your shirt or cap.

You ever thought about your own use of symbols? Have you considered symbols that you attribute meaning to? Do you use symbols to influence people to take action that you want them to do? I never considered this much, but when I first read this I was blown away by the concept. Now many years later, I realize just how much more relevant this is today. I just realized I have a device that I am holding in my hand that I frequently swipe through a list of symbols all day long!

Anyway, I would advise seriously putting thought into what symbols are being used to influence you. I think you will be surprised. Spend a day tracking them, do you know what they all mean and what their origins are?
