Sitting in a seminar today, one of the people had this slogan on their presentation – “innovate or evaporate.” I thought this was clever. Thinking about this on a personal level, do we not also need to be carving out time in our lives to innovate? Come up with new and better ways to do things? If not, we will not just atrophy and get overcome by the complex sprawl of life? Really not that hard, but I was thinking about areas to innovate. I spend a lot of time in certain processes through a day. How good am I at them?
For example, I write a lot. Probably at least 3000 words a day. Perhaps I can innovate on that subject? Writing better, faster, or finding new means of communicating rather than by email. How much time could I shave off in a day if I was spending last time in an email application?
Same thing with my clothing, food and organization of my office. Innovation in this could save me time, reduce decision making and increase my productivity. There are probably hundreds of areas of innovation in our personal lives. I remember when I fully committed to online bill pay – that reduced a giant amount of time each month. Innovations are everywhere, I am sure you can find them if you can simply identify and recognize the areas that you are spending repetitive time.
