The story goes that Althaea learned from the fates that a paticular piece of wood in the family hearth would determine the life span of her son. She consequently removed the stick from the fire and hid it away. Her son would go onto live a life as a hero.
Then after a great hunt he awarded the hide to the woman he liked who helped during the hunt. A few men tried to rape her, whom he killed. Then his uncles got mad that he gave a hunting prize to a woman, and he killed them as well.
Althea upon hearing the news of her brother’s death, found the stick and threw it in the fire. Her son fell dead once the stick was consumed in the fire.
Interesting lessons.
Trying to avoid your destiny can carry great consequence.
You are often justified in defending a just cause, but your defense can easily go to far.
