When stepping out onto a unknown or unfamiliar path there is a tendency to think that there may not be enough opportunities for you. This is just a completely false thought and if you are not careful you will reinforce that thought until you believe it. The reality is that opportunity abounds everywhere, so no matter what path you take you will find almost unlimited potential. This is the great fallacy of youth.
When I was young I was real careful to pick and choose and worried about my decision on “what to do with my life.” The reason is that I thought that I might be limiting my opportunity in some way by the path that I chose to take. However, here is the situation. When there is almost unlimited potential opportunity, then any path hardly limits your opportunity at all. In fact it probably exponentially expands. Being afraid of not having enough opportunity to chose from is really rather silly if you think of it in these terms.
Imagine a chess player at the beginning of the game throwing up her hands and exclaiming, I have no moves. Now in the opening of the game of chess there are about 30 moves that you can initially make. Of course once you make a move, the number of possibilities expand exponentially. There are well over 300 known opening sequences that are studied religiously be chess zealots and there are even more than that if you consider obscure ones. The total number of possible chess situations are staggering. I think it is like 10 to the 120th power. An astronomical number. The popular saying is that there are more chess positions then atoms in the known universe. Limitless opportunity on a 64 square board. Funny, our brains will think I have no chance.
Amazing. I heard a sales person exclaim that “no one” will talk to me. There are no opportunities. That is just a crazy thing to say. The number of opportunities in the world of any sales environment is also staggering. There are plenty of opportunities out there, it is us that are too hesitant to go find them.
So do not let your fear stop you from risk. You can jump onto the path and you will find opportunity, it is inevitable.
