Day 234 – When You’re Still Inside the Failure

For those of you reading this while experiencing a current failure, this is for you. Wisdom about failure is easiest to accept after it has stopped hurting. That is what many of those trying to help will do, provide you advice. They always say it takes many failures before success finally comes, but that advice is usually spoken by those who have already made it to those who have not. It offers little comfort to anyone still trapped in the quagmire of a present failure.

I would not begin by saying, “This will make you stronger,” or “One day you’ll be grateful for this.” That may be true later, but it is often cruelly premature.

I’m sorry. This hurts. And you don’t have to turn it into wisdom today.

Right now, failure may feel like a verdict on who you are, but it is not. It is a place you are standing in. A miserable place, maybe. A humiliating place, maybe. But still only a place, not your identity, not your destiny, not the final sentence of your story.

Do not try to solve your whole life from inside this mud. That is too much. First, get through today. Eat something. Sleep if you can. Tell one honest person what happened. Stop the bleeding where you can. Make one small repair. Take one next step that does not require you to believe in a grand future yet.

You do not have to feel hopeful to keep moving. Sometimes hope comes after movement, not before it.

And remember this: the people who now speak calmly about failure were not calm when they were inside it. They too had nights when the lesson had not arrived, when the meaning was invisible, when all they had was the next breath and the next hour.

“You do not have to feel hopeful to keep moving. Sometimes hope comes after movement, not before it.”

So for now, do not ask, “How will this become success?” Ask, “What is the next inch of solid ground?” Find that. Stand there. Then find the next.

I won’t insult you by pretending this doesn’t hurt. But I also won’t let this moment pretend it is the whole truth about you. Stay with the next step. Not the whole staircase, just the next step.
