Day 96 – Risk Avoidance

Taking risks is really uncomfortable. I think we all avoid risk, we all fear risk and given a choice will opt out of taking any risks at all. However, I think we have to. From the day we are born until the day we die, life is full of risk. Just walking out your door in the morning could be considered a major risk! Risk is as much a part of life as anything else we do, including the need to succeed and the upsetting failure.

If you are not risking anything, you are not really living. Dancing on the edge of potential failure is the only way you can truly progress. As you push forward and test the limits of your capabilities and expand your known universe you will grow, become stronger, and get closer to discovering your potential. You want to grow as a person and improve your life, then you must take risks.

No one likes risk. If anyone says, that they are a natural risk taker – they are lying to themselves. It is possible to become accustomed to the risk and overtime, the activity that you used to think was dangerous will become well known to you and you will no longer see the risk. It will be firmly in your comfort zone. The snowboarder always starts out sliding down this hill on his or her backside and the first jump is always scary.

When I started the 365 commitment, I wrote down what I wanted to accomplish. I am making progress, but it would be really great to speed things up a bit. This is why I came to the risk avoidance thought. The reason that I am not progressing fast enough is that I am avoiding risk. Tomorrow’s 365 list is going to include some considerations for what risks I am willing to take, what boundaries I am going to push, what part of my life I am willing to disrupt to meet my goals.
