The Basement – Day 2

Getting up at sunrise, will be doing our best to summit Mount Cedric Wright. He was an famous wilderness photographer. He was a mentor to Ansel Adams and was a mainstay at the early sierra club meetings when those started in the early 1900s. He was also a pretty accomplished violinist. Seems like a pretty awesome person to think about as we scale his mountain and overlook the eastern most portion of the John Muir Trail.

One of Wright’s famous photos.

After we are done admiring this area it is now time to head northbound on the famous JMT (John Muir Trail). We will hit 11K feet around Lake Marjorie which lies at the base of a mountain range that you can see from a distance when you are driving up the highway at on the desert floor below. Then it is along a flat plane until we come to the valley at the base of Mount Ruskin. This area is home to Bench lake and is where the old JMT used to go. I remember this area as a child really well. We will find a place to stay somewhere around Bench Lake. It is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Sierras, so we will see if that still holds true!
