Day 218 – Staying Focused

It is amazing just how difficult it is to stay focused everyday. Starting my day every morning in prayer and contemplation over what is the most important thing to do today has helped, but it is not enough. My new thing was to create some objectives with key results and then every morning remind myself on what I want to accomplish before I create my 365 list.

Unfortunately that has not worked out well either. The very concept of just remembering what is important to me is elusive. The reason is that for me to focus on what is important is real work. My nature is to avoid work – plain and simple. If left to my own devices, I will just go on my merry way and settle into a pattern and try to accomplish that pattern with as little work as possible.

I think a key element to successfully following this commitment has been to shock myself periodically, to wake myself up to a sense of the reality that I have to act in order to reach my goals. Goals just do not happen, they require consistent focus and direction and you have to strive toward them everyday. A true goal is not just going to be handed to you. I have to stay focused on what I am trying to achieve and remind myself of that fact everyday and design my day around accomplishing those objectives.

Otherwise, I am just going about my day handling things as they come without specific direction. I suppose this is why good habits are needed, because on the days (and there are many of them) where I am just going through the motions, at least I have the habits I have formed. Good habits make even the bad days productive.
