Day 275 – This Land is Your Land

This is Day 4 of my wanderin’ in the wilderness. I will have had a good solid day of hiking behind me and one difficult sleep on the hard ground. I will have wished I brought a better pillow, and then wish I had not brought a bunch of things as I lift the heavy pack again.

About mid-morning, I will start singing memorized songs that always serve to pick me up when I am feeling down. My favorites, by far, are songs from Woody Guthrie. This is one you will remember the most, but pay attention to the verse I highlighted. No one remembers this verse!

This land is your land, this land is my land

From California to the New York Island

From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream Waters

This land was made for you and me

As I went walking that ribbon of highway

I saw above me that endless skyway

Saw below me that golden valley

This land was made for you and me

I roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps

To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts

All around me a voice was sounding

This land was made for you and me

As the sun was shining, and I was strolling

And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling

A voice come chanting as the fog was lifting

This land was made for you and me

When the sun comes shining then I was strolling

And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling

A voice come chanting as the fog was lifting

This land was made for you and me

As I was walkin’ – I saw a sign there

And that sign said “No trespassin'”

But on the other side …. it didn’t say nothin!

Now that side was made for you and me!

In the squares of the city – In the shadow of the steeple

Near the relief office – I see my people

And some are grumblin’ and some are wonderin’

If this land’s still made for you and me
