I’ve been lagging these last few days. As I woke up this morning I listened to that clear early morning voice that said “what if you got up and did 100 squats, 8 hill sprints, 100 pushups, and 50 pullups?”
If I did all of these things I would “catch up’ my exercise commitments to current state. I would feel better all day. A sense of triumph and absence of guilt would be great. I had a moment of will and realized that this was totally possible. It would not be easy – but in reality is was not really a monumental feat, it would just suck a little bit. So I got out of bed and got started!
I embraced the suck, and I rode that moment of will into action. In fact I only have to do 12 more pull-ups . . . be right back . . . (3 minutes pass)
OK! Done. Feels good man!
When you have that moment of will, don’t let it pass, capitalize on it. I’ve had that “moment of will’ feeling many times in the past and I’ll feel hopeful, like “yeah, I’m going to do (fill in the blank)”; in the moment of will it feels like I will continue to feel this way . . . but then I’ll wait and that moment of will passes, sort of ebbs away, and the motivation goes with it. The moment of will can be fleeting, so pounce on it when you have the opportunity.
When you feel that moment of will DON’T LET IT PASS without doing something. Drop to the floor next to your desk and do some pushups, or take that walk/run around the building, or focus on your list of what is most important – get up out of bed early and catch up your exercise commitment! Whatever your goals and chosen good habits are – act on them in that moment. Like a surfer rides a wave. Catch that moment of will wave NOW because you may be waiting a while before another one comes in.
