Day 110 – Whit’s fur ye’ll no go by ye

A few days ago, I engaged in a conversation with a friend about a novel business venture I am contemplating. Admittedly, I harbored concerns about my capacity to seize this emerging opportunity effectively. Intriguingly, my friend, whose mother hails from Ireland, imparted a reassuring adage she often employs: “What’s for you won’t go by you.” This phrase piqued my curiosity, leading me to discover its origins in an ancient Scottish saying: “Whit’s fur ye’ll no go by ye.”

This sage counsel resonated with me, yet I am not one to simply embrace an aphorism without deeper reflection. The phrase compelled me to ponder its philosophical underpinnings, particularly the notion of fate it seems to implicitly endorse. My stance on fate is ambivalent; I am skeptical of the idea that mythical beings residing in the celestial abodes of gods dictate the destinies of humanity, potentially subject to their whims. Nonetheless, the Stoic philosophy, with its emphasis on acknowledging and understanding fate’s role in our lives, holds a certain appeal to me. I find myself navigating a delicate equilibrium: harboring a steadfast belief in a divine plan while concurrently recognizing my obligation to exercise personal agency. This encapsulates the perennial philosophical conundrum: the intricate dance between free will and determinism.

Adopting a more utilitarian perspective can indeed offer a refreshing dimension to this contemplation. If the ultimate goal is to cultivate personal happiness, embracing this mindset yields tangible benefits. Foremost among these is the alleviation of stress concerning missed opportunities—whether it’s articulating the perfect phrase in a crucial conversation, securing a pivotal client, or making a timely investment. This philosophy cultivates an understanding that opportunities genuinely suited to my strengths, skills, and passions are not fleeting but are destined to resonate deeply with me, ultimately manifesting as the ideal fit.

This concept is not as enigmatic as it initially appears; in fact, it’s grounded in practical reasoning. Consider the dynamics of a perfect match: when an individual’s unique offerings seamlessly align with another’s specific needs, the likelihood of being overlooked diminishes significantly. A harmonious alignment is indeed a rarity, a treasure not easily found. This was vividly illustrated during my search for a sales director. After a series of unsuccessful attempts, I found myself in a vexing predicament. However, amidst these challenges, I encountered an individual whose qualifications and demeanor impeccably matched the requirements of the role. Given the arduous journey and the numerous disappointments that preceded it, I was resolute in my decision to secure this candidate. The realization that I had finally discovered the ideal match propelled me to ensure this opportunity was not squandered.

Embracing this phrase wholeheartedly, I’ve come to appreciate its profound wisdom. It instills in me the conviction that when an opportunity aligns impeccably with my essence, its realization becomes almost inevitable. Therefore, my primary endeavor shifts from striving for spectacular feats to expanding my horizons, engaging with new individuals, and exploring the multitude of prospects waiting to resonate with my unique persona. Consequently, the notion of needing to perform extraordinary acts to succeed is replaced by the pursuit of authenticity—of being unapologetically myself. This is rooted in the belief that the opportunity destined for me, which genuinely mirrors my individuality, is out there, waiting to be uncovered. Embracing this concept, I echo the sentiment of Amor Fati—love of fate, confidently navigating the path ahead with the understanding that the journey itself will guide me to where I am meant to be.
